| The Fighting Téméraire
From the famous Turner painting A Limited Edition hand coloured print on glass No. 179 of 375 singed and numbered This is a very unusual and rare version of this famous ship. This would enhance any Naval buff's collection! It is the most popular painting in Gt. Britain. 34 cms x 26.7 cms (including the maple wood frame it is 45.8 cms x 38 cms) The Temeraire was a French ship captured and converted to English use. She distinguished herself in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 by coming to the rescue of Nelson's flagship Victory and capturing two 75-gun French ships of the line, although Nelson had been mortally wounded before her arrival. After this battle she was dubbed "The Fighting Temeraire". In 1838, rendered obsolete by age, changes in ship design and the onset of steam, she was consigned to the breaker's yard. Turner painted his famous picture as she was towed away by a steam tug against the sunset. Price: £145 |
